# CLI quickstart

`lm` is the Living Memory terminal interface. It saves capsule grants locally and calls the hosted service. You need network access for remote operations.

The CLI calls the free capsule configuration a **Room**. Keep the actual command spelling `--room`; it is not a separate product.

## Install

For macOS or Linux:

```sh
curl -fsSL https://living-memory-cli.pages.dev/install.sh | sh
```

Open a new terminal and run `lm version`. The installer referenced by the current CLI documentation targets `0.1.0-rc.4`; use the [CLI release page](https://github.com/v1b3x0r/lm-cli/releases) for release details and manual downloads. Do not assume installer updates track repository changes immediately.

## Use a capsule

```sh
lm list
lm create my-project --room
lm inspect my-project
printf '%s' 'The project uses blue buttons.' | lm remember my-project
printf '%s' 'Which button color is used?' | lm recall my-project
lm state my-project
```

Expected result: creation saves one grant, inspection identifies the capsule, and recall finds the fact. Creation and inspection can print secret entrances; keep that output private.

`lm list` combines locally saved capsules with account Worlds when signed in. If account inventory fails, local capsules remain visible. `lm inspect` reads live state; saved creation-time expiry is only a snapshot.

Text comes from stdin. Use private files for sensitive content rather than literal shell arguments.

## Account World

```sh
lm login
lm inspect --account
lm world
```

Login is separate from entitlement. `lm world` guides you to the website when access is not active and confirms the World when access is available. It does not charge your account or migrate capsule data.

Run `lm help` for the installed binary's commands. See [Your first memory](/first-memory.md) for the complete loop.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.living-memory.app/cli.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
