# Your first memory

This tutorial uses the CLI to demonstrate a complete hosted capsule loop. You need an installed `lm`, network access, and permission to create a capsule and store the example fact. See [CLI quickstart](/cli.md) for installation.

The CLI calls this configuration a **Room**, so the create command uses `--room`.

## Create once

```sh
lm version
lm list
lm create my-project --room
lm inspect my-project
```

If `my-project` already exists, skip creation. Keep creation and inspection output private: it can contain credential URLs. The alias is saved on this machine.

## Keep and recall one fact

```sh
printf '%s' 'The project uses blue for its primary buttons.' | lm remember my-project
printf '%s' 'What color do the primary buttons use?' | lm recall my-project
```

Expected result: the write succeeds, and recall returns relevant text about blue primary buttons. Search wording can differ from the original fact. An error or empty result is not a successful demonstration.

## Continue in another session

```sh
printf '%s' 'The button color is decided. Next: draft the settings page.' | lm handoff my-project
```

Open another terminal using the same saved credentials:

```sh
lm resume my-project
```

Expected result: the checkpoint includes the next step about drafting the settings page. You did not create another capsule or paste a transcript.

For another machine, see the private grant-transfer instructions in [Leave work for the next agent](/handoff.md). If a command fails, use [Troubleshooting](/troubleshooting.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.living-memory.app/first-memory.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
