# Reference & documentation status

## Hosted tool map

Tool availability depends on the actual connection and deployed version. Discover before calling.

| Goal                            | Hosted MCP                  | CLI                             |
| ------------------------------- | --------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Keep a fact                     | `memory_add`                | `lm remember`                   |
| Recall relevant facts           | `memory_search`             | `lm recall`                     |
| Read memory state               | `memory_state`              | `lm state`                      |
| Leave a checkpoint              | `handoff_post`              | `lm handoff`                    |
| Read a checkpoint               | `handoff_read`              | `lm resume`                     |
| Find checkpoint IDs | `handoff_list` when offered | Use an MCP client |
| Identify reachable environments | `world_list` when offered   | `lm inspect`, account inventory |

The JS SDK uses `enterSpace`, `remember` and `search`. Local stdio MCP has a separate package contract; do not assume it exposes every hosted tool.

## Sources and versions

* [CLI source and releases](https://github.com/v1b3x0r/lm-cli)
* [JavaScript SDK](https://github.com/v1b3x0r/living-memory-js)
* [Engine and local MCP](https://github.com/v1b3x0r/living-memory-engine)
* [Living Memory launcher](https://living-memory.app/)

This first-use edition was checked on 2 October 2026. The hosted create → remember → recall → handoff → resume workflow was verified using CLI release `0.1.0-rc.4`, including grant transfer, read-only recall and refusal of read-only writes. JS SDK `0.1.0` also passed remember/search against the same hosted capsule. Other clients and account checkout were not exercised in that verification.

This edition covers first use, access, sharing and lifecycle. Full API reference, self-hosting and engine internals are deferred. World claim/migration and owner-managed capsule controls are not promised as current features.

Release notes will identify user-visible changes and the relevant version as they are verified. Documentation updates are separate from product releases.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.living-memory.app/reference.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
